What is a Widget?

They come in all shapes and sizes. Some offer information – like flight tracking widgets. Some are purely for entertainment – like photo-sharing widgets. But all possess a few of the same qualities.

They’re small. They’re user friendly. They’re fun. They’re viral. And they can help brands sell products.

When widgets work best, they propagate themselves. If they’re particularly useful, consumers start buzz and encourage conversions. Some widgets even share themselves through social networking tactics. Widgets have very simple purposes and functions. The more intuitive the interface, the more likely they’ll be loved by an audience. Widgets are designed to engage the user visually first and through utility second.

According to comScore, 615 Million people – that’s 65% of worldwide internet users – viewed or engaged with a widget in June 2008, alone.
